Description
From Kenya's renowned Nyeri region comes this exceptional AA grade coffee, cultivated by 680 smallholder farmers who are members of the Rutuma Amalgamated Farmer Cooperative Society. Located in Kirimukuyu ward at 1,700-1,800 meters above sea level, Ngandu Factory benefits from rich volcanic soil and ideal weather conditions that define Kenya's distinctive coffee character.
The farmers grow a thoughtful mix of varieties: the legendary SL28 and SL34, developed in the 1930s with deep root systems that thrive without irrigation, alongside disease-resistant Batian and Ruiru 11. Most members farm less than one hectare, representing the smallholder dedication that produces 70% of Kenya's coffee.
The fully washed processing follows meticulous Kenyan tradition: hand-picked cherries are pulped, fermented in concrete tanks for 12-24 hours, washed through grading channels with fresh stream water, then carefully dried on raised beds for 7-14 days. Workers turn the parchment frequently and provide shade during peak heat to ensure even drying.
The AA grade represents the largest bean size, screening at 17/18, which translates to beans larger than 7.2 millimeters - a mark of quality that Kenyan coffee is celebrated for worldwide.
Enjoy!
